What is a Turkish Towel? (and why you need one)

It’s crazy to think that it’s now well over three years since I swapped out my first cotton towel for a Turkish towel and since then I’ve replaced 2 further towels that came to the end of their useful life. Before I purchased my first towel I remember thinking, what is so special about Turkish towels – in fact, what is a Turkish towel?

A Turkish towel is a luxurious towel traditionally made in Turkey from organic cotton. Also known as a Peshtemal, Fouta or Hammam towel, Turkish towel benefits include lightweight design, incredibly absorbent, quick drying and eco-friendly. Uses range from bath and beach to home décor and fitness.

It’s quite interesting that only recently, the mention of a Turkish Towel evokes images of elegance, softness, and luxury. Now renowned for their exceptional quality, absorbency, and unique designs,

Turkish towels have gained popularity worldwide only in the last 5 – 10 years.

But where did they come from and how long have they actually been around?

Origins and History

The story of Turkish towels dates back centuries. Originating in Anatolia, a region in present-day Turkey, these towels have a rich cultural heritage.

Known as “peshtemal” or “fouta,” they were initially woven by Turkish artisans using locally grown cotton.

Traditionally, these towels were an integral part of Turkish bath culture, Hammams, and were used for cleansing and relaxation.

Over time, their popularity spread beyond Turkey’s borders, gaining recognition in Europe during the Ottoman Empire.

Characteristics and Weaving Techniques

What sets Turkish towels apart from others is their unique characteristics and weaving techniques.

The weaving techniques used in the creation of Turkish towels have been passed down from family member to family member ensuring the traditional skills continue to exist today,

These techniques along with the organic Turkish cotton and tight weave give you a towel that is both extremely soft and highly absorbent, both characteristics you’d want in a bath or beach towel.

In addition, one of the distinguishing features of Turkish towels is their lightweight and thin nature. Unlike bulky terry cloth towels, Turkish towels are compact and easy to carry. This makes them ideal for travel, as they take up minimal space in a bag or suitcase.

Their quick-drying property prevents musty odors and allows for convenient and efficient use.

Versatility and Uses

Turkish towels are incredibly versatile and can be used in various settings. Their absorbency and fast-drying nature make them perfect for bath and beach use.

One interesting fact I’ve learned since investing in a Turkish towel is that these types of towels are highly durable, last a long time, and even seem to become softer after every wash.

Turkish Towels are not just for the beach or bathroom.

They can be used as items of clothing and as soft furnishings around the home as well.

Although I haven’t actually worn a Turkish towel yet, many of my friends have.

Possible uses are:

• Sarong
• Scarf
• Shawl
• Beach wrap

The beautiful designs of the towels really do add a touch of color to any outfit.

Turkish towels are even going down a storm in the home décor market.

Providing warmth to any interior, a peshtemal also adds color and style to an otherwise bland room.

A friend of mine recently purchased a lovely diamond pattern towel but is using it as a Turkish throw for their living room sofa. Another friend has used theirs as a lovely blanket at the end of their bed.

There are quite simply a lot of uses around the home for Turkish towels.

Now think health and fitness, use in this area are widespread but other than the swimming pool I think I’ve seen them used most in yoga sessions or places where meditation is performed.

With so many uses it’s no wonder these towels are popular.

And on top of all that, the traditional production methods are sustainable, and the use of organic cotton means these towels are considered to be eco-friendly alternatives to conventional towels.

There’s no doubt that Turkish towels now have a global reach, this is most likely due to the combination of luxury and practicality and people really are adopting them into their everyday lives.

From a business perspective, many boutique hotels and high-end spas have now switched to Turkish towels due to their luxurious quality and due to the fact that a good quality hammam towel will last a long time.
