Having kept bees for some time now I do love the smell of the hive. It’s not to everyone’s taste as it’s quite distinctive and so when I decided to use beeswax candles instead of my trusty soy candles I wondered what do beeswax candles smell like.
Beeswax candles are known for their distinctive scent which is a captivating blend of warmth, sweetness, and earthiness. This very unique fragrance is one of the things that sets beeswax candles apart from other types of candles where fragrances are less natural.
Being a beekeeper and known in our village for using beeswax candles I do get asked various questions as most people have not explored beeswax candles before.
Below is a list of the main queries I get asked but before we get into the detail there are a couple of other articles you might be interested in that will provide even more insights into beeswax candles.

Take Me ThereWhat Do Beeswax Candles Smell Of?
Here are just some of the responses I get when I ask people to describe the smell of a beeswax candle.
- Warm, sweet, and earthy
- Natural and inviting
- Invokes a sense of comfort and relaxation
- Distinct honey-like fragrance
- Therapeutic and soothing
Everyone seems to sense and feel differently when they smell beeswax candles which I think is a real positive.
Does Beeswax Have a Strong Smell?
Personally, I think beeswax candles do have a strong smell but it certainly isn’t overpowering.
I think that some people find the scent so different to other candles that they believe that it’s strong.
The unique fragrance is one of the reasons why beeswax candles are highly sought after by candle enthusiasts and those who appreciate natural aromas.
Does Beeswax Have a Natural Scent?
I find that most beeswax candles have a natural scent.
Beeswax is derived from the wax produced by honeybees in their hives and so it is a natural substance that undergoes minimal processing before being used in candle production.
The beeswax used for candles retains some of the natural compounds found in the beehive, which contributes to its characteristic scent.
There are now exceptions to this as some candle makers are introducing artificial fragrances which I think is a shame as I love the natural aroma.
Why Does Beeswax Smell Bad?
While beeswax is generally known for its pleasant aroma, there are instances where it can have an unpleasant smell.
The one experience I can remember around this topic is when some beeswax I’d set aside for candle-making absorbed odours from its surroundings.
I won’t mention what the strong or unpleasant smell was but needless to say, if beeswax is stored in an environment with a strong odour, it may take on those scents and start to smell bad.
Another reason can be if beeswax is heated too much during the candle-making process, it can develop a burnt or acrid smell.
One final point is that it’s important to buy beeswax candles from a reputable company. It has been known for beeswax candles, usually imported from abroad, to be full of chemicals which when lit do not give off the same wonderful aroma 100% beeswax candles do.
Conclusion
If you are still concerned about how beeswax candles smell then I’d encourage you to buy some to try.
I personally think the natural fragrance given off by beeswax candles is one of the best of all candle types. Of course, there are so many choices with soy candles that you can choose a different fragrance every day.
But there’s something special about a beeswax candle, very relaxing!
