It’s been a while since I replaces my reusable water bottle but what I remember was that there were just so many options out there on the market. With so many great bottles you could choose how do you come to the right decision? Ease of cleaning and specifically being dishwasher safe might just be the deciding factor.
As a general rule, reusable glass water bottles and stainless steel water bottles that are not insulated are dishwasher safe however you should make sure by checking the bottle packaging, the manufacturer’s care instructions or the bottle itself for the dishwasher safe symbol or text.
As I was doing my research I found it quite difficult to keep certain features, such as being dishwasher safe, in mind and so I decided to put a list together which I hope you’ll find useful.
Below you’ll find details about many of the most popular water bottles on the market and whether they are actually dishwasher safe or not.
It’s worth noting that I also put notes such as “(not lid)” if parts of the bottle can be placed in the dishwasher and others cannot.
But first, let me answer a couple of questions I regularly get asked.
Why are Some Water Bottles not Dishwasher Safe
When I was doing my research I found it a bit of a nightmare because there didn’t seem to be any pattern of why some bottles were dishwasher safe and others were not.
In my ignorance, I thought that perhaps all stainless steel water bottles would be dishwasher safe, or maybe all glass bottles.
Although it does seem to be brand/manufacturer specific here are a few reasons why some water bottles are not dishwasher safe.
1. Sensitivity to Temperature
It’s certainly the case for some of the cheaper plastic bottles, that they are quite likely to deform in the dishwasher.
2. Chemical Leaching
We all know about the dangers BPA but what I didn’t know was that some plastic bottles can leach chemicals into beverages after they’ve been in the dishwasher.
3. Damage to Features
Damage to certain water bottle features is another reason why certain bottles can’t go in the dishwasher.
For example with many insulated water bottles, it’s not recommended to wash them in a dishwasher as the high temperatures and high pressures could damage the bottle’s insulation properties.
Other components such as lids may also be at risk if placed in the dishwasher.
4. Material Coatings
Some reusable water bottles, particularly those made from stainless steel have special coatings that when exposed to the heat and pressures of a dishwasher can actually get damaged affecting the bottle’s appearance or functionality.
As with any product, you should always consult the manufacturer’s care instructions when it comes to whether your water bottle is dishwasher safe or not.
If in any doubt, I’ve found the best approach is to air on the side of caution and wash your bottle by hand in warm soapy water.

How to Tell if a Water Bottle is Dishwasher Safe
Here are some of my tips on how you can tell if a water bottle can go in the dishwasher.
1. Buying New? Check the Packaging
This is an obvious one but if you’re out buying your bottle from a store then you’ll most likely find washing instructions in the packaging.
2. What is the Bottle Made From?
If you are desperate to wash your reusable bottle in the dishwasher then you may want to determine what the bottle is made from. As a general rule, glass water bottles can be washed in the dishwasher.
Stainless steel bottles that don’t have insulated features should be dishwasher safe.
But I must stress, I would prefer to know for sure than risk damage to my water bottle so my advice, again, is if in doubt wash it by hand.
3. Check for the Dishwasher Safe Symbol
Again, this tip seems obvious but you’d be surprised how many people miss the dishwasher safe symbol on the actual bottle itself.
Although this symbol differs between countries it usually depicts a plate and/or glassware with water drops above.
If you see this symbol on the water bottle, it would suggest that it is dishwasher safe.
4. Check with the Water Bottle Manufacturer
Now that everything is online water bottle manufacturers usually show their care instructions on their website so it’s worth checking there.
If your bottle is a little older and not shown on the website you can always contact their support team, they will be glad to help.
