Buying a Turkish Blanket? Our complete guide is here

turkish blanket

When I was looking to replace the blankets in my home I did a lot of research into the different types of blankets, what they were made of as well as the different styles that would compliment my home decor.

I came across Turkish blankets and at first, I was really unsure as to why so many people were recommending them as blankets for your home but as I started to look in greater detail I realised they are a real contender.

Turkish blankets make a great addition to anyone’s home. Comfort, softness, durability and eco-friendliness all come out as the top reasons why people buy these types of blankets. In addition, Turkish blankets come in a huge range of colours and styles to suit everyone’s design tastes.

So let’s take a look at Turkish Blankets in more detail.

What is a Turkish blanket?

An authentic Turkish blanket is made by traditional weavers located in just a few areas of Turkey. These blankets are made from 100% sustainable Turkish cotton making them a good eco-friendly choice and are available in numerous colours and sizes.

Turkish blankets are identifiable in two ways, Firstly by their traditional tasselled fringe which is usually found on both short ends of the blanket and secondly by their flat weave.

The main benefits of Turkish blankets are:

  1. Eco-Friendly
  2. Wonderfully soft
  3. Lovely and warm
  4. Lightweight
  5. Colourful designs
  6. Fast drying
  7. Easy to care for
  8. Durable

What are Turkish blankets made of?

Authentic Turkish blankets are made from organic Turkish cotton. This cotton has certain properties that give Turkish blankets several benefits over other blankets which include being lightweight, quick-drying and very soft.

Turkish cotton is only grown in Turkey and critically for making blankets and towels it produces extra-long, thin fibres when spun. During the weaving process, these fibres produce a greater number of loops than a regular blanket.

These loops are the reason that Turkish blankets remain soft and quick drying.

Are Turkish blankets eco-friendly?

Traditional Turkish blankets are eco-friendly.

Firstly, as we have already discussed, these blankets are made from sustainable Turkish cotton, but if you are unsure of a blanket’s ethical values, check the labelling for the OEKO TEX Standard 100 certification.

It’s important to us that we have OEKO TEX Standard 100 certification on all of our products. Our next aim is to become a certified organic brand.

In addition to the material Turkish blankets are made from, overall they tend to get less dirty.

The weave of a Turkish towel is tight and flat and so, although these blankets are lovely and soft, they don’t have a deep pile. Because of this, less dirt can get trapped and so you won’t need to wash them so often.

Even when you do have to wash them, you’ll use fewer resources than many of the regular blankets on the market. But more on how to wash Turkish blankets later.

Turkish blanket sizes

Turkish blanket sizes tend to be directly related to bed mattress sizes.

Here’s a handy size chart to help you decide which size of Turkish blanket is right for you.

Is a Turkish towel a blanket?

Turkish towels and Turkish blankets are very similar with the main difference being size. As a general rule, Turkish towels are approximately 90 x 170 cm however Turkish blankets can be considerably bigger commonly around 180 x 240 cm.

Whilst of course you can use a Turkish towel as a blanket, it really is a blanket for one, or at a push 2 people.

Types of Turkish blanket and their Uses

Turkish blankets are incredibly versatile and durable making them ideal for a variety of different uses.

Here are my top recommendations on how to use a Turkish blanket:

    1. Turkish Blankets in the Home

Of course one of the most popular uses for Turkish towels is as a blanket for the bed.

Turkish blankets are wonderful at bedtime

If you’re looking for a practical blanket then Turkish blankets are wonderfully soft and will keep you nice and warm. If you’re instead looking to add some style to your current bedding then Turkish blankets make lovely bed throws.

As well as bed throws Turkish blankets made great furniture throws adding real style to any chair or sofa that you have.

My favourite use for Turkish blankets in the home is simply as a blanket to watch TV. Personally, I don’t think there’s anything better than snuggling up in front of the TV on a winter evening wrapped in a cosy, soft blanket.

    2. Turkish Picnic Blanket

Outdoor Turkish blankets make wonderful picnic blankets.

They come in so many beautiful designs that no matter what your taste is, traditional or contemporary, you’ll find a blanket that’s right for you.

Turkish picnic blankets come in various sizes, some as big as 2m (7 foot) square so if you have children as I do then the whole family will be able to fit on one picnic blanket.

They are lovely and light to carry as well, making them ideal if your favourite picnic spot is a short (or long) walk away.

    3. Turkish Beach Blanket

If you’re heading off to the beach any time soon then make sure you take a Turkish blanket with you.

They are super lightweight and fold down flat which makes them ideal for travelling and at the beach you’ll find that if they get wet they’ll dry super fast.

One of the best things about Turkish beach blankets is that they repel sand. Yes, I know it’s almost unbelievable but one quick shake of the blanket before you leave will remove any sand.

    4. Turkish Yoga Blanket

It’s not always possible to take a yoga mat with you, especially if you’re travelling and so Turkish blankets make great yoga mats.

These towels are an ideal alternative to yoga mats on the beach, in the park or even outside in the garden.

Top Tip: If you have a large blanket it can be worth folding it in half or even thirds for added comfort

    5. Turkish Wedding Blanket

From the research I’ve done, there is no specific Turkish wedding blanket however it’s a nice touch to include one or two as you dress the room for the first night as a married couple.

I would also recommend Turkish blankets as a lovely wedding gift, ideal for the couple’s new home.

    Turkish Blanket Design

Turkish blankets now come in a huge variety of different colours and patterns.

Patterns such as herringbone, subtle stripes and solid colour weaves are all now commonplace.

Whether your taste is more classical or contemporary they’ll be a large choice of blankets when you go to make your purchase.

One final point around design, as you’ll probably already know Turkish blankets come with the authentic fringe and this is not always to people’s taste, personally I love it but there will definitely be others that don’t.

How to Wash a Turkish Blanket

Washing a Turkish blanket is generally much the same as washing any other type of blanket however there are a couple of things you should be aware of.

As all blankets are not the same please make sure you check the care label of your item before laundering. The following information is general advice for authentic Turkish blankets.

Before its first use, you should soak your Turkish blanket in water for a minimum of 12 hours. This allows the cotton fibres to relax and ensures your blanket will be super soft for the future

You’ll want to avoid fabric conditioner when washing your blankets as well as avoid the tumble dryer.

Washing Turkish blankets is very similar to washing Turkish towels. I wrote an article all about how to wash Turkish towels which I’d encourage you to read next.

    People Also Ask

    Are Turkish Blankets Warm?

Turkish blankets are incredibly warm even though they have more of a flat pile than regular cotton blankets. The tight weave and long thin organic cotton fibres produce more loops which act as a great insulator which in turn keeps you nice and cosy.

Why are Turkish Blankets so Expensive?

Turkish blankets seem more expensive than regular blankets however you must take into account all benefits when you compare. Durability is very important when deciding how expensive a blanket is with Turkish blankets lasting much longer than other styles on the market.

    Conclusion: Are Turkish blankets good?

Hopefully, you’ll have got the feeling from the information I’ve provided that Turkish blankets are awesome!

They would make great additions to your home injecting layers of style and colour into any room.

From an on-the-go perspective Turkish blankets a perfect to travel with, make fantastic beach blankets as well as wonderful picnic blankets.

They are super easy to care for and as long as you follow the care instructions will last your a lifetime.

    Where to buy Turkish blankets?

Turkish blankets are now extremely popular across the world including the UK, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

If browsing in person is important to you, you’ll find a large range of Turkish blankets on the high street and in the shopping malls. Most home decor chains now stock these types of towels however my favourite places to buy Turkish blankets are the small independent boutique shops where they stock a slightly smaller range of authentic quality blankets.

If online is your thing then there’s always Amazon which will provide the biggest and widest choice however where possible I like to support the smaller online retailer. A quick Google search will soon provide a list of wonderful possibilities.

    Best Turkish Blankets

When you start looking for the best Turkish Blankets it’s worth making sure that you focus your search on authentic blankets. As I’ve already mentioned there are a few regions in Turkey that produce these quality items and so you need to make sure the product you buy originates from this area.

After you’ve found the right retailer just make sure all the common sense checks are done especially if you’re buying online. So check company reviews, delivery times and returns policy. Due to the nature of buying clothing and fabric items, it is always good to receive free returns just in case the colour and/or size is not as expected.

Whilst I’ll not be able to recommend all the Turkish blanket variants I’ve provided below just a few products to allow you to continue to browse at your leisure.
